In June, the 2008 NEON Summer Health Career Academy for 6th and 7th graders in the NEMCC school district will be held.  This one-week, fun-filled academy will introduce students to various health careers, i.e. nursing, medicine, and allied health. 

Academy dates:

  • Magnolia Regional Health Center June 9-13

  • Baptist Memorial Hospital Booneville June 16-20

  • Baptist Memorial Hospital Union Co. June 16-20

  • North Mississippi Medical Center Tupelo June 2-6

  • North Mississippi Medical Center West Point July 7-11

  • Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle July 9-11

Students must complete an application, write an essay, and receive 2 recommendations from teachers or counselors.  The application packet must be mailed to:

Nursing Mentorship Academy
February 12 - April 10, 2008

2008 Nursing Mentorship Academy Enrollment Information

The NEON grant project will sponsor (6) high school mentorship academies in collaboration with Itawamba Community College, Northeast MS Community College, East MS Community College (GTR), North MS Medical Center (Tupelo, West Point), Baptist Memorial Hospitals (Booneville, Union, Columbus), Magnolia Regional Health Center. Twenty high school seniors from each community college district will be selected to participate in the 8 week academy. Students will be selected to participate in the program based upon letters of recommendation, grades, essay, and interview.

Following successful completion of the nurse mentorship academy, each participant will receive nurse assistant training which will prepare the student for the nurse aide certification exam and employment opportunities. This preparation will occur in June 2008 leading to an exciting career in health care.

The mentorship academies for 2008 will run from February 12th- April 10th. The Academy will meet two days a week after school for two hours each day in order for students to:

  • become familiar with the hospital environment.
  • attain basic understanding of medical terminology.
  • demonstrate CPR and Heimlich maneuver satisfactorily.
  • comprehend factors that promote career success.
  • discuss various roles and responsibilities of the nurse.

After the 8 week nursing mentorship academy, the student will:

  • complete the State of MS Nurse Aid training program requirements
  • pass the NATP written exam and skills check off to receive certification
  • identify career opportunities associated with certification status.

Students who are interested must apply by the deadline dates identified on each separate application. Letters of acceptance will go out the first week in February. The Academy will consist of mentoring, professionalism, career planning, medical terminology, job shadowing, guest lectures, and health related information. Each student will receive a uniform, lab coat, and a T-shirt to begin the mentorship program. Students who continue with the nurse aide training program will receive a nurse kit and certificate of completion along with the certification examination fee paid. Students completing this phase will be recognized with a pinning ceremony in which they will receive a nurse assistant pin and recognition for their achievement through the collaborative efforts of the grant project, the health care facilities, and the high school partnerships.

These academies were made possible by a Community Based Job Training grant as implemented by the US Dept. of Labor, WIA, MS Department of Employment Security, the colleges, health care facilities, and high school partnerships.
